कुछ न होना हाथ में — एक काम ही तो है।
सोचने-समझने में,
ये आसान ही तो है।

काम न करने का अंदाज़ निराला,
हर एक खोज,
एक अंजाम ही तो है। ऊँचा सोचने वाले अक्सर काम नहीं करते।

ताजमहल बनाने वाले हथियार नहीं उठाते।
राम या अल्लाह अलीशान मकानों में नहीं बैठे।
अपनी तस्वीर वहीं पेश की जहाँ कुछ न कुछ काम चल रहा था।

जो कुछ भी हम कर रहे हैं,
वो सब — एक काम ही तो है।

बड़ी मुद्दत से सोचता हूँ —
“कुछ काम करूं,
कुछ काम करूं।”
पर लोगों ने करने से रोक दिया है मुझे।

यह भी तो, एक काम ही है।

यहाँ सब कुछ संभव है —
ऐसा सोचकर जुट जाना,
एक बहुत बड़ा काम ही तो है।

Work

To have nothing in hand —
Is that not work, in itself?
To sit and ponder,
Is a task, subtle and deft.

The art of doing nothing — so rare,
Every discovery, an end it must bear.
Those who think lofty, often refrain
From doing — they find no gain.

The builders of Taj Mahal,
Never wielded a sword.
Neither Ram nor Allah
Sat in palaces adored.

Their images emerged instead
Where hands and hearts were truly led.

Whatever we are doing,
Isn’t it all — just work in being?

For long, I’ve longed to act,
“Let me do something, make an impact.”
But people told me to stay my hand —
Their refusal too, a work unplanned.

Here, everything is possible,
To believe so, and to begin —
Is perhaps the greatest
Work there has ever been.
