शहर है मेरा महानगर,
पर शहरी नहीं शरीफ यहाँ।
लोग-बाग़ सब आते हैं,
वो होते नहीं अमीर यहाँ।
अगर वे होते रौबदार,
न आते यहाँ बरखुरदार।
न करते दर-दर की चाकरी,
न खाते ठोकरें बार-बार।
देखो शहर के बाजार में,
बैठे कितने लोग।
लगाए अपनी दुकान,
सजाए करीने से सब भोग।
देखो शहर के बाजार में,
मारा गया किसान।
शहर के शानो-शौकत में,
लग गया है हर इंसान।
देखो शहर के बाजार में,
मिलती है सब चीज़।
काश! गेहूं भी पैदा होता यहाँ,
तो मर जाता बेचारा किसान।

” City Markets “
My city is a grand metropolis, But the people here—hardly noble or kind.
People come, come in crowds! Yet none among them truly rich we find.
Had they been powerful and well-to-do,
They wouldn’t roam these streets, it’s plain.
They wouldn’t knock from door to door,
Or beg again and again.
Behold the city markets— How many sit in rows!
They’ve opened polished shops, Selling every pleasure they chose.
Behold the city markets—
The farmer falls, his fate too harsh.
In the glitter of pump and show,
Every soul is caught in its glow.
Behold the city markets— Everything here’s for sale.
If only wheat were grown here in the city,
The poor farmer would become truly irrelevant.
